Receives Fulbright Specialist Award at National University Of Music in Bucharest, Romania May 3-19, 2022

 

Pianist/composer Amen Donelian

 

ARMEN DONELIAN, Adjunct Professor at The New School College of Performing Arts / Jazz (NY) for 34 years, has been selected for a Fulbright Specialist project in Bucharest, Romania during May 3–19, 2022.

 While in Romania, Donelian – a pianist, composer and author – will train faculty, graduate and undergraduate students of the National University of Music in Jazz curriculum, teaching methods and curriculum assessment and development.

 Donelian also will travel on May 14-15 to the historic city of Brasov to perform a solo piano concert followed by a talk and Q&A in the Chamber Jazz series at the Multicultural Center at Transylvania University.

 Armen Donelian is a 2002 Fulbright Senior Scholar for work in Armenia and a Fulbright Specialist in Armenia (2003), Finland (2004), Switzerland (2005), Sweden (2006) and Greece (2009). A frequent visiting scholar at conservatories throughout Europe, Donelian has been an Adjunct Professor at William Paterson University (NJ) (1993-2017). He is the author of four books published by Advance Music, Schott Music and Edition Gruber. And with saxophonist Marc Mommaas, Donelian is the co-founder of the Hudson Jazz Workshop, now in its 16th year.

 A recipient of six Jazz Performance Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, Armen Donelian has performed in 25 countries since 1975 with Sonny Rollins, Chet Baker, Sheila Jordan, David Liebman, Mongo Santamaria, Paquito D’Rivera and Billy Harper. He has produced 14 critically acclaimed recordings for the Sunnyside, Playscape, Odin and Atlas labels, including Fresh Start, his April 1st Sunnyside release with bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Dennis Mackrel. On his 2-disc set, Sayat-Nova: Songs Of My Ancestors (also on Sunnyside), Donelian explores his Armenian musical heritage through a Jazz lens accompanied by bassist David Clark and drummer George Schuller.
