The New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music presents
THE SONNY ROLLINS ENSEMBLE
Armen Donelian, Director
In this class students play, listen to and study the music of Sonny Rollins, one of the most influential tenor saxophonists in the post-bop lineage originating from Charlie Parker. Director Armen Donelian worked in Rollins’ band during 1977-78. He pays special attention in this course to developing the student's improvisational originality, melodic and harmonic clarity, sensitivity to dynamics and timbral nuances, propulsive and relaxed sense of time and rhythm, and interplay within the rhythm section, traits associated with Rollins’ style.
